Hypnosis vs Hypnotherapy
About Hypnotherapy
A form of psychotherapy
A non-evasive form of behavioral therapy
Hypnotherapy is basically a form of psychotherapy which uses hypnosis as a means of effecting deep and lasting changes. Most hypnotherapists in the UK have training or even a background in psychotherapy and psychology.
Nothing is more soothing and fast acting for people suffering from most kinds
of stress, anxiety or panic, but it is equally effective for smoking, slimming,
confidence boosting and so on.
People of all ages can be hypnotized, so
long as they are over four years old, do not suffer from serious mental
disorders and are not under the influence of alcohol. Children respond well to
hypnotherapy, particularly for stammering, nervous skin disorders and bed
wetting. Most children are highly imaginative and make especially good hypnotic
subjects. Incidentally, it should be pointed out that a light trance often
obtains the best results.
Why is hypnotherapy so effective?
Nothing is more powerful than the human mind. It is the power of the mind which creates our problems in the first place, it is this same power which is utilized by hypnosis to work for us rather than against us. The subconscious mind is a very real thing. Anything the brain is doing right now without consulting you is being done subconsciously, for example, adjusting your blood pressure, making little changes to your body temperature all day long. These physical things it does autonomously but it goes way beyond the physical - it also has a considerable say over our feelings, habits and emotions. Like a computer, the subconscious mind decides the degree of fear you may feel when confronted, for example, by a ferocious looking dog - a lot of it is predetermined by the input of your past experiences. If you are a smoker, it is also the subconscious mind that decides to make you crave nicotine regardless of what you, ('the conscious mind'), may think about smoking!
Unfortunately the conscious mind, willpower if you like, normally has little
control over this deeper part of the mind.
This is not an unfortunate flaw of
nature, it is in fact essential that we have no such override. Imagine how
quickly the human race would die out if we could stop our hearts beating or
switch off our appetites at will! As far as your inner, subconscious mind is
concerned, all your anxieties, cravings or habits are in your best interests.
When it gets things wrong, it is unaware that this is the case, like a real
computer it cannot reason things out, it is programmed in a certain way and that
is the end of the matter! But thanks to hypnotherapy this is not the end of the
matter. Hypnosis is easily the most direct way of communicating with and
're-programming' the inner (subconscious) mind.
The mind is like an iceberg
The mind has often been compared to an iceberg, the
conscious mind, the bit we think with and have control over, is only the tip of
the iceberg. Beneath the surface is the subconscious mind, much larger, more
powerful and hidden. It can do a lot of good, but if wrongly programmed can
unwittingly do us a lot of harm. Hypnosis penetrates beneath the surface to make
sure that this immense power is working for you rather than against you. For
example , if you feel afraid the moment you encounter something harmless such as
a bird or a cat, it is because your inner mind is programmed to produce that
fear.
The conscious mind may know perfectly well that such animals are safe, but
the subconscious is bigger and more powerful and produces fear which overrides
the thinking mind. Hypnosis is a wonderful form of deep relaxation of the mind
in which a kind of door or barrier protecting the inner mind is progressively
opened. This allows beneficial suggestion and other skilful means of achieving
positive change, such as NLP (neuron linguistic programming) to be employed, to
bring about the changes you want.
Far from being a quick fix, hypnotherapy will
endeavor to get to the root of the problem so that it is treating the cause as
well as the symptom. It was once believed that this required a long process,
often taking months or even years. Can you imagine taking that long to fix a
computer! Of course the mind is a lot more powerful and complicated than any
computer, but there is no longer any need to put up with a distressing problem
when through investing a little time and money in hypnotherapy you can gain
control over your own mind instead of letting it control you!
Remember
that the mind has a tremendous amount of influence over the body, (holistic
practitioners would argue that there is no division between the two), and
hypnotherapy is effective for a whole range of physical disorders such as
migraine, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and skin disorders. There is a
link at the top of each page taking you to the full A-Z list.
Where does the power of hypnotherapy come from?
With hypnotherapy, the power of the subconscious mind is harnessed to benefit instead of harm. The subconscious accomplishes a great deal of tasks without us being aware anything is going on. This ability is usually an advantage, but sometimes it can end up having a negative impact. For instance, your subconscious determines how much sadness or anxiety you feel, which in turn influences other areas of your health such as your blood pressure, back and neck pains, and stomach issues.
If your subconscious regularly triggers you to be in a negative frame of mind, your mental and physical health can be affected.
Although you are more aware of your conscious mind, the subconscious is actually the part of your brain that controls the majority of your behaviors. Our minds have developed this ability to ensure that your consciousness does not overrule fundamental needs such as eating and breathing. However, the subconscious also contains all of your emotional memories, fears, behavioral patterns, and cravings, and doesn't use rationality to determine when to trigger these feelings.
Hypnotherapy is a way to bypass the conscious and directly communicate with the subconscious. In doing so, hypnotherapy helps to dispel the negative emotions and behaviors stored there. By undergoing hypnotherapy, your subconscious learns to focus on more positive and healthy reactions, leaving you free to be relaxed, calm, and happy. Hypnotherapy brings out the positive powers of your subconscious while treating the underlying negative factors. Ultimately, you are given the ability to control your life instead of allowing your subconscious to control you.
